A Report of the Thirtieth Anniversary Family Day

In beautiful sunshine, our club celebrated its thirtieth birthday on Sunday 28 October with approximately a hundred members and guests in attendance. Two special awards were given out: our fantastic coach Paul Baldwin was unanimously elected to Life Member, and our fabulous Jennie Waters was honoured with a Tennis Service Award from Tennis Victoria for her tireless commitment to the club.

The courts and surrounds were in immaculate condition thanks to former President and current Vice President Craig Roper grooming the courts just prior to the celebrations starting, and thanks to the President, Vice President and Coach ridding the grounds of weeds and rubbish Sunday morning. Much fun was had on the courts, ranging from the more social hits to impromptu doubles challenges taking place. The club’s ball machine proved popular with the children.

Awardees

Jennie has been serving as junior convenor for countless years. The award is from Tennis Victoria and is a Tennis Service Award in recognition of loyal service to tennis in the state of Victoria. Keep smiling, Jennie!

Paul Baldwin is the club coach, a role he has held for 24 years. Paul's sustained contributions to the club above and beyond his coaching role were recognised by being elected a Life Member of the club. Well done, Paul!

Distinguished Members

Many distinguished members attended the celebrations, including Deputy Mayor of Manningham Michelle Kleinert (who spoke in glowing terms about the wonderful community feel of the club), Councillors Geoff Gough and Mike Zafiropoulos, Past Presidents Beth Bolton, Geoff Bandy, Will Leggat, Andrew Lack and Craig Roper, Life Members Beth Bolton, Geoff Bandy, David Booth, Will Leggat, Jennie Waters and newly bestowed Paul Baldwin, and Distinguished Past Members Trevor and Julie Walker, Merv Bolton and Emma Booth.

Richard Chambers from Tennis Victoria presented the club with a 30 Year Certificate. Richard regularly visits our club to provide support from Tennis Victoria. On the left of Richard is our club President Ross Hocking.

Secretary Nima Goharpey spoke on behalf of Ray White. Unfortunately, representatives from Bendigo Bank and the Fish & Burger Co were unable to attend.

Fine Dining

We were blessed with scrumptious food from several sources.

Always a crowd favourite is Master chef Jim Staios' souvlakis. As has become a tradition, Jim brings his own equipment, sets up next to the club house hours before the event starts, and settles into the trance-like ritual of slowly cooking the meat on the spit. (Or so we were led to believe, until it emerged that he brings his mum along to cook the meat under the hot sun while he sits in the shade as happy as a lark.)

Our new sponsor, the Fish & Burger Co, generously provided boxes and boxes of sliders to supplement Jim's souvlakis. No one went hungry on the day! (And just to make triply sure of that, Jennie brought an enormous mud cake.)

Crowd Favourite

Life Member and Treasurer David Booth's T-shirt won the unofficial Crowd Favourite. Meticulous as ever, David only wears this T-shirt on Very Special Occasions.

Thanks from the President

Club President Ross Hocking gave thanks to all those who have contributed so much to the club.

The inaugural members, Beth and Merv Bolton, and Geoff Bandy, were in attendance. Before the club house was built, afternoon teas were held in the bus shelter and committee meetings were held in the car park or at the Bolton’s house. The club owes a great debt to the founders. Their hard work and vision (years before the official opening in 1988) has helped the Club to be what it is today. The attendance of former junior convenor Trevor Walker was acknowledged as was the amazing contribution of David Booth in many roles at the club over a number of years (the excellent electronic photo display of the club and its members over the thirty years was put together by Boothy) and the great work of Will Leggat.

Thanks was given to our sponsors Bendigo Bank, Ray White and the Fish & Burger Co. The club cannot function without their wonderful support. Thanks to the City of Manningham and Tennis Victoria for their ongoing and considerable support.

Thanks to all who attended and to the committee for their great work in preparation for the day and on the day.
